Jackie in the Cederberg - 28 March 2009

2nd October 2009

Jackie passed away peacefully this morning. Please light a candle for her & send her your prayers.

26th June 2009

Jackie’s cancer has grown more advanced recently. As a result we have put the fundraising on hold.  The whole family would like to thank everyone for their support & generosity.

Please note that Jackie is too ill to be able to give personal replies to the comments left on this site. Viktor reads them to her from time to time, so she does receive them & she greatly appreciates the good wishes.

Please see the Latest News page for updates from Jackie & Viktor.

“You have little time left and none of it for crap, a fine state. I would say the best of us always comes out when we are against the wall when we feel the sword dangling overhead, personally I wouldn’t have it any other way.” (Don Juan Matus)

Jackie Rixon, much loved and respected mother, hatha yoga instructor and callanetics teacher based in Kommetjie, Cape Town was diagnosed in April 2009 with final stage stomach cancer.

Having ensured her 18-year old daughter, Tessa, had passed her drivers licence and would be in safe hands, Jackie had been looking forward to a long-dreamed-of year of travelling and working abroad. In preparation, she had completed a TEFL course, put together her modeling portfolio (Jackie is a successful commercial model), sold her car, and was in the process of renting out her house. The trip was to be a period of both fun and reflection, a mixture of yoga retreats in Bali and teaching English in Italy. Jackie was planning to quietly celebrate her fortieth birthday in June.

A week before she was due to leave, however, at her mother’s insistence Jackie consulted a specialist to check up on the stomach pains and other symptoms she had been experiencing – previously diagnosed as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).  While the results of the investigation and tests were shocking to her and everyone around her – she had always been admired as a picture of health – Jackie’s first concerns were for Tessa.

So now Jackie is on a very different journey.  A journey, which although unwanted and unplanned – and with inevitably difficult times ahead – she now views as a gift.  An opportunity to open her heart and to be an inspiration to others who are suffering.

Because the cancer had already spread too far, there was no option of chemotherapy or surgery. So with the support of a close friend and yoga teacher, she has sifted through an avalanche of possible alternative treatments and with her characteristic dedication and discipline has chosen to follow a special diet and course of iscador / mistletoe, ozone (oxygen) and vitamin c treatment.  She also continues to deepen her daily meditation and yoga practices.

Already Jackie and her family have been witness to the humanity that her circumstances are generating.  People are being brought together and  are opening their hearts.  They are touched and humbled by her positive approach, amazed that during such adversity she is still managing to maintain her warmth and humour.  Old and new friends and family are gathering, prayer circles are forming – and buckets of broccoli sprouts are being produced in homes throughout Scarborough!

Hey Jackie… I did yoga with Viktor this morning. He is not as hardcore as you. But he is more hairy. No suprises I’m still as supple as a plank. But at least I now know the moves and don’t feel odd going ‘ohhhhhhm!’ We think of you all the time. You’ll always be our yogic inspiration.

Hey Jackie,

I am a friend of Nikki and am so touched by the way in which you are facing this challenge. There is a verse in Isaiah (45:3) where God says:

I will give you the treasures of darkness,
riches stored in secret places,
so that you may know that I am the LORD,
the God of Israel, who summons you by name.

I pray that you would uncover many treasures in this journey that will sustain and bring healing to many.

Love,

David

Dear Jackie,

Via Viktor’s earlier email I received the news of your sickness and at first I could not believe it was you. I asked Jeanne and she confirmed. Since then you have been in my thoughts many times. I wish you all the love, honesty and friendship from your loved ones and all that are touched by your story.

Hi Jackie,
Via a friend of mine in Noordhoek, I heard that you have not been very well. When I think of you, I just remember all those good times we had in our early twenties. Do you remember that time we drove my motorbike up to Arniston to see Richard and Alistair-what a laugh hey!! And that time I dragged you up the mountain when you were heavily pregnant with Tessa. Jackie, you were such a special friend to me then and I will never forget those times. I really treasure those memories. I have been living in London for the last 6 years and still happily married to Geoff. We actually celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary last Monday. I have heard you are a fantastic yoga teacher and muched loved. My friend, Mario was going to your classes.
I am thinking of you and hope you are comfortable and surrounded by your loved ones.
Much love,
Penny.

It has been a long, long time since we were last in contact and it seems just like yesterday we were at school and then shortly after that period…I was coming round to your place in Constantia to collect plates to sell at the market……gosh, then I ended up getting married to Mikey Fermor and we connected briefly again…
I am deeply sad to hear of your illness and admire your courage to take an alternative route. I wish you blessings and love to surround you and wish I could wave a magic wand to cure you.
I am still living in the Crags just outside of Plett and my home is open to you anytime you need to “get some space”
lots and lots of love and special wishes to you

Dear Jackie

Having been through the journey of cancer we have an understanding of what you and your family are going through right now. We have no wise words of wisdom as its tough but would just like to send you lots of strength, resilience, determination, hope, trust, love, understanding and compassion.
Remember Cancer is so limited, It cannot cripple love, It cannot shatter hope, It cannot corrode faith, It cannot eat away peace, It cannot destroy confidence, It cannot kill friendship, It cannot silence courage, It cannot invade the soul, It cannot reduce eternal life, It cannot quench the spirit

HI Jackie,
It was 5 years ago that I joined your yoga and callanetics classes at Imhoff. It was a fantastic year, a year off from work, and time to spend relaxing and destressing. You played such an important role in my life during that year, so positive, motivating and encouraging. I will always remember my yoga days, and think of both you and Rene. They were very special days to me, and will always be remembered. These days, my life is too busy, and I don’t make the time to go to Yoga classes – my loss, and something I need to change. I was incredibly sorry to hear about your illness, lost for words. I can honestly say that now, not a day goes by without me thinking of you, and the incredible influence you have had in my life.I know that you have the strength of mind, and spirit to fight this illness, you really do.
Thank you for everything, I am quite sure you had no idea how much you meant to me, and I am grateful that I now have the chance to tell you. I will be making the time for yoga again, and you will be there with me.

Lots of love

Hi Jackie I will start by saying that the girls in the Callanetic Studio, of which there are still many who remember you well, are sad and shocked to hear of your illness and therefore this message comes with lots of love and kind thoughts…..Strength, dedication, honesty and love are attributes which you have always manifested and I still cherish the times you so willingly helped me out in the studio when I needed you. Hopefully that strength is helping you and your family through these difficult times.
With love and a big hug.

Dear Jackie,

I’m not sure what I can add to this page after seeing everyone else’s outpourings of love for you. Returning from NZ, where we had been to spend time with Christine’s brother who has cancer in his lymph system, to then hear that you had cancer too came as a shock. I guess, like many others, I thought how could this happen to you of all people? I also realise that if there was ever anyone who is best equipped to deal with this, it would be you. You are in my thoughts and wishes.

Charles

PS: I just started doing yoga with Rene, so now I have two teachers.

My dearest Jackie,

Candice told me today of this website so I am sorry for the delay in not getting in touch earlier but I did not want to bother you before. This way I know it is fine.

About three or four weeks ago I had the most powerful soul dream of you in the early hours of the morning. In the dream I was extremely distressed about you and you told me to keep calm as everything is absolutely okay. Your soul knows exactly what it is doing and so do you on whatever level that is. It gave me some deep inner calm for the first time since hearing about your condition.

You are never far from my thoughts and you are top of my prayer list every day.

My love to your family, Viktor and all those who are close to you.

With all my love,

Janaki

Hello Jackie from across the dam at Willow Waters.
Dodge (Dorian) and I remember your growing up days in the idyllic surroundings of the dam between our houses in Constantia, but we moved away, and then went to Spain for ten years, and lost touch.
One of the first things we did when we returned to Cape Town was to look for your dad to help with our garden in need…..sadly he was gone, but Marion soldiered on, and fixed things for us.

And now we hear that you are off to see Eric again……first of the family and all composed for the amazing journey ahead. The posts on your weblog say it all…..there is nothing we can add except to say that the memory of a young girl with duck eggs will be treasured even though we missed your blossoming into a beautiful woman. Whenever we visit the dam which is fairly often, we will think of you, and your quite remarkable family and friends.
Love from the Fords across the dam.

Hi Jacs

The number of messages and well wishers on this page are testament to the type of person you are and shall continue to be. Heres a little story for you from a book titled “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom :
The story is about a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean, having a grand old time. He’s enjoying the wind and fresh air – until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore.
‘My God, this is terrible,’ the wave says. ‘Look what’s going to happen to me!’
Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him, ‘Why do you look so sad?’
The first wave says, ‘You don’t understand! we’re all going to crash! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn’t it terrible?’
The second wave says, ‘No, YOU don’t understand. You’re not a wave, you’re part of the ocean.’

Look it in the eye and don’t back down….we are rooting for you.
Heaps of love and Hugs.

Dear Jax
I would like to thank you for being such a wonderful teacher and inspiration to me. You and your classes provided an incredible stabilising force in my life (coming at a difficult time for me last year with writing up my PhD, fending off the wolf from the door, and trying to keep dancing to a difficult relationship). You have always been a beautiful person to me, body and mind, and now it is also your soul that radiates with this energy. I think about you allot, in fact each time I do yoga and hear the Sanskrit words for the posture, it is your voice I hear, and I am reminded to send you loving and healing energy. You are also a constant reminder of how precious life is and that there are still better things to come. Peace with you, Namaste.

Dear Jackie,

Your courage, acceptance and faith are a great inspiration. I wish you blessings on your journey and send this poem as an offering. With deepest metta
shanti mather

Presence

I give you emptiness,
I give you plenitude
Unwrap them carefully.
One’s as fragile as the other.
And when you thank me,
I’ll pretend not to notice
The doubt in your voice
When you say they’re just what you wanted.

Put them on the table by your bed
When you wake in the morning
They’ll have gone through the door of sleep
Into your head.

Wherever you go, they’ll go with you
And wherever you are you’ll wonder, smiling,
About the fullness you can’t add to
And the emptiness that you can fill.
